RAMONA R.  (PREWITT) SHERMAN

Ramona R. (Prewitt) Sherman of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, left this life to meet her Lord and Maker on Saturday, June 27, 2020, surrounded by her beloved family, at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 25 days old.

Ramona was born on February 2, 1933 at the home of her parents, James E. Prewitt and Elizabeth (Mikkelsen) Prewitt, in Pleasant Hill.   She grew up in Pleasant Hill and attended school there from first grade through high school graduating in 1951.

She often shared many stories of her childhood -- growing up in a large family -- with four sisters and a brother and loving, caring parents and grandparents.  She also told stories of her school years.   She loved school and knew earlyon that she wanted to be a teacher.  She attended college at CMSC (now UCM), and received her B.S. in Business Education in 1955. She earned her B.S. in Elementary Education in 1969.

While in college Ramona met her husband and life-long partner, Elmore Sherman.  They were married on June 1, 1955 following her graduation; this June they celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary. They made their first home in Louisville, Kentucky, where both of their children, Jim and Cathy, were born.  They moved to Missouri in 1960.  Ramona was very content being a wife, mother to her children, and a homemaker, but began teaching when the P. H. Elementary School was in great need of a first-grade teacher.  Ramona taught in the classroom – first grade, second grade and Kindergarten -- for 22 years.  She loved teaching and always wanted to create in her students a love for school and for learning.  She was twice acknowledged as an outstanding classroom teacher in the publications of Who’s Who Among Teachers.

In 1985, after completing the Missouri Department of Education requirements, she planned and implemented the Parents as Teachers program for the P.H. School District and was their first Parent Educator.  She was excited about this new program and served for nine years as a Parent Educator.  During these years she worked with dozens of parents with babies and preschoolers. She loved working in this capacity, and considered these some of the most enjoyable years of her career.  Ramona retired in 1995.

Ramona and her husband enjoyed travelling, and after retiring they travelled to the remainder of the 49 states they had not yet been to (all except Alaska), and they made one trip to Europe – to Medjugorje,in Croatia -- on a religious Pilgrimage.  They also visited friends and relatives in all parts of the United States.

Ramona was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Lee’s Summit.  Her Faith has been very important in her life. She and her husband served as greeters in their church, and on the Welcoming Committee for many years.  Ramona was also a member of the Cass County Retired Teachers Organization for 20 years and a member of the Pleasant Hill All-School Reunion Committee for 25 years.

Ramona enjoyed cooking, especially baking and trying new recipes. She was a collector of recipes and cookbooks and had hundreds of them.

Ramona also enjoyed reading, working cross-word puzzles, researching on the computer, and exchanging emails and phone calls with friends and family. She had an interest in her family’s genealogy and worked for many years on the family tree.  She loved the offerings of her home in the country – being able to take walks, to garden, and to just enjoy nature.

Most of all, Ramona enjoyed her family: her husband, their children, their grandchildren, their five great-grandchildren, and the families of her and Elmore’s brothers and sisters.  She and her husband hosted many, many family dinners, picnics, and other get-togethers for family birthdays and holidays. They enjoyed family gatherings and looked forward to the whole family being together.

Ramona (aka Honey, Mom, Mama, Grandma, Grams, Mrs. Sherman), is greatly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Norman Prewitt; three sisters, Lois Barnes, Mari Meadows, and infant Norma Jean Prewitt; and her daughter-in-law, Pamela Sherman.

She is survived by her husband, Elmore, of the home;  her son, Jim Sherman of Overland Park; her daughter, Cathy (and Don) Spencer of Pleasant Hill;  four grandchildren,Jeff (and Chrisinda) Spencer of Orrick, Missouri, Jenny (and Eric) Errante of Phoenix, Arizona, Catie Spencer of Pleasant Hill, and Sarah Sherman of Overland Park; her five great-grandchildren: Evelyn Errante, Alaina Spencer, Violet Errante, Lizzy Spencer, and Benjamin Spencer; two sisters, Nancy (and Joe)Kardwell of New York, and Rita Dickerson of Pleasant Hill; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends.
