Obituary

MARY PAT MEYER

Mary Patricia Meyer, 88, of Pleasant Hill, was born in Harrisonville on March 22, 1932, the daughter of Horace Jackson and Lucile (Connelly) Moody, and sister of older brother, Jackson Connelly Moody.

After graduation from Harrisonville High School in 1950, Mary Pat continued her education, eventually earning a Master’s degree in Music Education from Central Missouri State University (UCM).

She met her husband, H. Kenneth Meyer, while she was teaching in Creighton, MO. After his assignment in Newfoundland and discharge from the Air Force, the two were married in Harrisonville on May 27, 1956. Sixty years of marriage brought them a family full of love and countless adventures across the globe.

Mary Pat’s musical talents and passion for education helped shape her long career as an elementary school music teacher. While she began teaching in Creighton, MO, she spent most of her career in the Pleasant Hill School District, retiring in 1991 after 25+ years. She shared her love of music by teaching students how to play various instruments, producing school musicals, and encouraging them to find music that inspired them.

In addition to music education, she loved serving the Pleasant Hill community. She was a charter member of the Pleasant Hill Community United Way and was recently honored as a 70-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She served on the Parks and Recreation board, and was a member of the Piecemakers Quilters Guild, and the Lioness Club. Mary Pat was heavily involved with the Lay Clergy Council,an instrumental committee member in opening the Thrift Store in 2009, and delivered for Meals on Wheels for many years. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill 1st Presbyterian Church where she played the organ for over 50 years, but was recently attending the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed reading, quilting, and traveling, and was a member of a book club for over 20 years.

Mary Pat was preceded in death by her parents and brother, as well as her husband of 60 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Gretchen Lucile (and Rick) Benware, of Pleasant Hill, and Melanie Kenn (and Brian) Zink-Schyvinck of Blue Springs; six grandchildren, Patrick (and Christina) Benware of Raymore, Megan Benware, of Raymore, Kendra (and Tim) Goodman of Roeland Park,  Erica Zink (and fiancé Jared Ginter) of Lee’s Summit, Tyler Schyvinck, of Kansas City, and Meredith Schyvinck of Mission; two great grandchildren, Grayson Meyer Benware, and Brooks Scott Benware, both of Raymore; other relatives and friends.
